Columbus v Real Salt Lake
Time Commentary
90+' Final - Real Salt Lake 4, Columbus 2 (aggregate)
For the second straight year, Real Salt Lake pulls off a conference semifinal shocker. In 2008, RSL upset Chivas USA and this year it eliminates the reigning MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew 4-2 on aggregate. After conceding the first two goals to fall behind 2-1, Javier Morales and Robbie Findley struck late in the first half with Findley's penalty putting the visitors ahead. Andy Williams added a final goal in the 74th. Real Salt Lake advances to face Chicago or New England in the East final on Nov. 14. That's all from Crew Stadium, thanks for following our match commentary!
90+' Lenhart saved on a close header
Steven Lenhart's soft header is gathered in by RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando and we are almost done here.
90+' Lenhart offside on a nice rush upfield
Steven Lenhart is offside on a nice breakaway for the Crew, and there are about two minutes left.
90+' Final sub of the match
Real Salt Lake makes its final substitution, with Andy Williams exiting in favor of midfielder Jean Alexandre.
90' Four minutes of stoppage time
We have four minutes of stoppage time here at Crew Stadium.
89' Crowd fairly quiet
It's a weird vibe at Crew Stadium as play winds down. The Crew had possibly the most talented team in the league but this could go down as one of the greatest upsets in MLS playoff history.
87' More frantic play by the Crew
Real Salt Lake is doing well absorbing the pressure by the Crew.
85' Garey saved by Rimando!!!!
RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando makes a reaction save on a point-blank header by Jason Garey after Robbie Rogers fed him perfectly with a cross from the left side. That could have made it very interesting.
84' Final substitution - Columbus
Forward Jason Garey comes in for Gino Padula as the final change for a desperate Columbus side.
82' Second substitution - Real Salt Lake
Midfielder Clint Mathis replaces Javier Morales for RSL.
82' Another Schelotto free kick wasted
Guillermo Barros Schelotto sends in another quality free kick from the right side, but it is cleared by the RSL defense.
80' Kreis deserves credit
Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis insisted he would play positive soccer, and he has kept his word. RSL has been dangerous all night and looks poised for its third road victory of the year.
79' Padula shot well off target
Gino Padula takes a shot that is well wide and high. Columbus is really pressing as we close in on 10 minutes left.
76' Rimando with a save for RSL
Nick Rimando makes a save when a header off a free kick comes right at him. It's a reminder that the Crew aren't quite finished yet, although they need two goals with about 13 minutes left.
74' Second substitution - Columbus
Steven Lenhart replaced Frankie Hejduk for Columbus moments before Williams' goal.
74' Goal Real Salt Lake!!!
The ensuing corner kick results in a goal that could end the season for the Crew. Andy Williams sends in a cross through traffic that beats William Hesmer to make it 4-2 for the visitors! This place is stunned!!!
74' Movsisyan nearly beats Hesmer
Yura Movsisyan gets free on the right side and his shot is sent wide by Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer to keep the Crew alive!
71' Olave misses a sitter!!!!
Jamison Olave could have put this series away, but his free header off a corner kick misses the target. It was a stunning display of bad defense from the Crew, who are looking nervous with their season on the line.
68' Yellow card - Real Salt Lake
Javier Morales draws the first caution for RSL for a semi-deliberate handball. Guillermo Barros Schelotto's inviting cross is headed just wide of RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando's net.
65' Columbus just misses several point-blank chances!
The Crew had several chances from in close with headers but somehow Real Salt Lake keeps it out. Eddie Gaven and Chad Marshall had chances but RSL was stout.
64' First substitution for both teams
Yura Movsisyan enters for Fabian Espindola with the first change. Playmaker Robbie Rogers replaces Emmanuel Ekpo for Columbus as the clock continues to be its enemy.
62' RSL holding the ball some
Real Salt Lake has done a nice job of knocking the ball around the last few minutes and making Columbus chase. RSL could use a sub pretty soon since it looks tired.
58' Yellow card - Columbus
Alejandro Moreno gets a yellow card for a dive after he tried to bait Baldomero Toledo into calling a foul in the box. Moreno touched the ball past Javier Morales and then tripped over the RSL defender but the question is whether Morales made contact with Moreno. It was a tough call either way.
57' Schelotto free kick goes into the wall!
Guillermo Barros Schelotto just sent a free kick from about 21 yards out and straightway into the Real Salt Lake wall and Gino Padula sent his follow shot wide. That was a great opportunity for the reigning champions!
55' Another RSL handball missed!!!
Andy Williams had the ball hit off his hand in the RSL box and it was not called. Williams hit it inadvertently but it should have been called and the Crew fans are in an uproar.
54' Johnson down for RSL
Will Johnson takes the brunt of a challenge from Columbus' Emmanuel Ekpo. Kyle Beckerman wastes his free kick as he tries to send a ball in.
52' Schelotto free kick creates danger
Guillermo Barros Schelotto sends in an inviting free kick that is headed down by Chad Marshall into the path of Eric Brunner, who can only touch it harmlessly into RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
50' Morales back up
Javier Morales, who has played very well for RSL, is back up.
48' O'Rourke clips Morales
Javier Morales is ready for a counter-attack when Crew midfielder Danny O'Rourke clips him pretty hard and draws the first caution of the match. Kyle Beckerman and Guillermo Barros Schelotto are having words - they have been going it all game.
46' Second half underway
Will this be as exciting as the first half? We'll see.
45+' Second-half adjustments?
Alejandro Moreno was limping around for the Crew, so it's possible he may be coming off. The big question is how aggressive Real Salt Lake will be with a one-goal lead in the second half.
45+' Halftime - Real Salt Lake 3, Columbus 2 (aggregate)
Real Salt Lake gave up the first two goals to go down 2-1 in this second leg, but Javier Morales and Robbie Findley have converted to put the visitors back on top 3-2 at the half. This crowd is stunned as it boos off the officials, who missed a clear handball by Robbie Russell on the other end moments before RSL was awarded a penalty in stoppage time. What an unbelievable half!
45+' RSL takes the lead back!!!
What a turn of events as Robbie Findley sends Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer the wrong way and makes it 3-2 on aggregate for the visitors.
45+' Penalty awarded to RSL!!!!
Fabian Espindola gets taken down by Crew defender Frankie Hejduk in the box on a free kick and it is a clear penalty.
45' One minute of stoppage time
We have one minute of stoppage time.
42' Russell handball not called
Robbie Russell just got away with one as he committed a handball that appeared to be just outside the box. Baldomero Toledo didn't see it but these fans at Crew Stadium sure did.
42' Action seems to have calmed down
We have had some midfield play after a series of end-to-end rushes. Both teams need a breather and halftime is around the corner.
38' Cross goes off the RSL crossbar
The action is fast and furious as Columbus midfielder Emmanuel Ekpo sends in a cross that goes off the crossbar after it eluded RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando. What a chaotic first half - possibly the best of the MLS playoffs so far!
37' RSL ties it right back!!!!!
Javier Morales has pulled RSL even, taking a nice pass from Kyle Beckerman and firing it past William Hesmer to make it 2-2 on aggregate. Moments earlier, Andy Williams had a shot blocked by Crew defender Frankie Hejduk, but Columbus never got the ball clear.
35' Columbus takes the lead!!!!
Guillermo Barros Schelotto continues to make up for lost time for the Crew. He takes advantage of a turnover by Robbie Russell and easily gets around RSL defender Jamison Olave before rifling a right-footed blast into the lower right corner of the goal. Columbus leads 2-1 on aggregate!
33' Findley barely misses target for RSL
Robbie Findley just blasted a beautiful left-footed shot that beat Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer but sailed just over the crossbar. That was a world-class effort.
31' Hejduk sends in a nice cross
Frankie Hejduk was wide open on the right side and his cross was headed down by Eddie Gaven, who was defended tightly by Jamison Olave.
27' RSL with some quality possession
Real Salt Lake had a nice stretch of possession, with Javier Morales serving as the orchestrator. Fabian Espindola was ruled just offside off a nice diagonal feed in one of RSL's best stretches of the match.
24' Williams being aggressive
RSL's Andy Williams has been aggressive, and he was just called for a foul on the left side after he muscled away a Columbus player to win another ball moments earlier.
22' How will RSL respond?
That was a shock to Real Salt Lake's system since it had several chances to get a goal moments before Guillermo Barros Schelotto struck for the Crew. How will the visitors react knowing that they struggle away from Utah?
19' Goal Columbus!!!
Well that Jamison Olave foul proved to be costly. Guillermo Barros Schelotto sent his free kick into the area and it bounced into the net past a diving Nick Rimando to get the Crew on the board. We are tied 1-1 on aggregate.
19' Big collision between Olave and Moreno
No caution is issued but RSL defender Jamison Olave just crashed into the Crew's Alejandro Moreno for a free kick.
17' Hejduk passes up a chance on goal?!
Columbus star Guillermo Barros Schelotto made a nice diagonal pass to Frankie Hejduk on the right side inside the box, but Hejduk inexplicably chose not to test Nick Riomando. Hejduk sent it back square and RSL was able to avoid danger.
14' Espindola earns first RSL corner
Fabian Espindola takes a whack from distance and it cracks off a Columbus defender for a corner. Javier Morales sends it in and it is sent away before Andy Williams sends it right back into the 6-yard box, where William Hesmer scoops it up.
12' Gaven header saved by Rimando
Columbus midfielder Eddie Gaven's close-range header was saved by Nick Rimando after Guillermo Barros Schelotto sent in a nice cross. Credit Emmanuel Ekpo for finding open space down the left side for Columbus.
10' Big save by Hesmer!
Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer just made a big save. Andy Williams was sent in by Javier Morales and Williams' close-range shot was saved by an onrushing Hesmer at the near post. Hesmer cut down the angle and was alert to the danger while his defense was not.
7' Morales and O'Rourke collide
Columbus midfielder Danny O'Rourke and RSL's Javier Morales collide on one sequence while Kyle Beckerman and Guillermo Barros Schelotto do the same moments later. Things are getting physical.
5' Schelotto down
Guillermo Barros Schelotto goes down for Columbus and RSL clears the ball. Schelotto is back up now, although he doesn't look happy.
3' All the action in the RSL box
It's no surprise that Columbus is attacking early and wins the first corner of the match. Kyle Beckerman heads clear the corner by Columbus star Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
2' Playoff format
Remember that road goals do not matter so if we are tied after 90, we will play 30 more. Former Crew midfielder Andy Williams commits an early foul to give the Crew a free kick.
1' We are underway from Columbus!
The Crew are in their home gold and RSL is wearing red and white and will move from right to left.
1' Toledo the man in charge
Baldomero Toledo will be the match referee tonight. It should be noted that the Crew's Chad Marshall was named MLS defender of the year earlier today for the second straight season. The teams are walking out and we are moments away from the start!
1' RSL road form in question
Real Salt Lake went 2-11-2 as visitors this season. It will be interesting to see coach Jason Kreis' approach. Will he bunker down and try to withstand what is sure to be a wave of pressure from the Crew? Or will he save that for the second half?
1' Pretty decent weather
It's a 44-degree night out here and a clear night. The Crew fans are out in force and it's a great atmosphere. Columbus has scored one goal in its last five matches - it needs at least one to get through to the Eastern Conference final.
1' Rogers out with Ekpo in
Robbie Rogers is out with Emmanuel Ekpo in his place for Columbus, while Yura Movsisyan will start on the bench for RSL. Movsisyan assisted on Robbie Findley's goal in the first leg and could be playing his last match for RSL, having agreed to play for Randers FC of Denmark after the MLS season. RSL hopes to have him for two more matches after tonight.
1' Schelotto back in lineup
The good news for Crew fans is that Guillermo Barros Schelotto is back in the lineup after Coach Robert Warzycha surprisingly sat him out for start of the first leg. Robbie Findley will once again be the RSL player the Crew have to keep an eye out on.
1' Greetings from Columbus, Ohio!!!
Welcome to Crew Stadium, home of the 2008 MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew! Tonight we find out if the Crew can continue their quest to repeat as they take on Real Salt Lake. Five days ago, RSL won at home 1-0 and will try to make that first-leg win stand up.
