Analysis: Loney has spent the season with San Diego's Triple-A affiliate in El Paso after being released by Tampa Bay on April 3. The 32-year-old was hitting .342 with 28 RBIs in 43 games for the Pacific Coast League club. Loney, who hit .280 with four homers and 32 RBIs in 104 games with the Rays last season, is expected to serve as New York's primary first baseman until Lucas Duda returns from injury.

Analysis: The club announced the move Sunday, hours before starting the season against the Toronto Blue Jays. He had been told last week that he would not be on the opening day roster. He has a guaranteed $8 million salary.
